Leader Sarwan Singh Pandher has demanded that the Central government respond to the requests that the farmers have been making for a long time. The main demands, which have been at the centre of the farmers’ protest for a long time, are the remission of agricultural loans and a legal guarantee on the minimum support price (MSP) for crops.
The call for attention to their demands follows the rejection of the latest government offers by farmer leaders involved in the “Delhi Chalo” protest. The government’s offer to purchase cotton, maize, and pulses at MSP for government agencies for the following five years was one of the offers that was turned down. Representatives from the farming community contended that the proposed plan falls short of meeting the needs and interests of the farming community.
Prominent member of the farmers’ movement Sarwan Singh Pandher declared on Tuesday that the Centre needs to pay attention to their demands for a legal guarantee on the MSP, which guarantees farmers a fair price for their produce. Pandher further underlined the urgent need for the agricultural community to demand the forgiveness of farm loans.
Farmer leaders expressed their displeasure with the government’s proposal, saying that it failed to address the main issues brought up by the demonstrators. The denial highlights the ongoing misunderstanding that exists between the farmers and the administration, extending the standoff that has defined the protests.
Pandher declared that on Wednesday, farmers would be gathering in Delhi, a sign of the protests becoming more intense. This move is a calculated escalation meant to highlight their demands and increase the pressure on the government to hold substantive talks.
Several rounds of negotiations between the government and farmer representatives have taken place as a result of the long-running agitation by farmers. However, a settlement has proven elusive as both parties struggle to reach an agreement on matters that are essential to the welfare of the farming community.
