The head of the European Parliament has invited Elon Musk to testify before the parliament, her spokesperson stated on Monday.

Billionaire Elon Musk was invited to speak in a letter from the speaker of the parliament, Roberta Metsola.

The reaction from Musk was not immediately known, and the parliament lacks the authority to force him to appear.

Since acquiring Twitter in October for $44 billion, Musk, the CEO of the electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla, has caused commotion and controversy.

Policymakers in the United States and Europe have expressed concern after he fired half of the company’s employees, reinstated former US president Donald Trump’s account, dropped a policy against Covid-19 misinformation, banned and then reinstated some journalists, and briefly blocked references to rival platforms on Twitter.

Due to his threat to media freedom, the European Commission has warned Musk that he may face “sanctions” from the EU.

Musk polled Twitter users on Monday about whether he should continue leading the internet business. Overall, 57.5% of users agreed that he should go.

Since he took over the company, the share price of Twitter has decreased by a third. Due to the turmoil, advertisers have stepped back from Twitter.
