Shankar Mahadevan, one of Bollywood’s most well-known vocalists, will celebrate his 55th birthday on Thursday. Mahadevan was born into a Tamil household and studied classical and Carnatic music as a kid before beginning to play the veena at the age of five under the guidance of veena master Shri Lalitha Venkataraman.

Mahadevan began working as a software engineer in Mumbai after graduating from college, but fate had other plans for him, and he finally found his way into the world of playback singing. Till now, he has provided his voice to a number of chart-topping songs in Hindi, English, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Urdu, and Punjabi during the course of his almost 20-year career.

For the song ‘Yenna Solla Pogirai,’ he earned his first National Award for playback singing in 2000. So far in his career, the music wizard has earned three National Awards. For his services to music, he received the prestigious Padma Shri award in 2019.

He hasn’t been involved in any formal scandals over his long career, but that doesn’t mean there hasn’t been any controversy around him.

During ‘Rising Star: Season 3,’ a singing reality programme in 2019, where contestants sing in front of judges Neeti Mohan, Diljit Dosanjh, and Shankar Mahadevan on the live programme.

One day, two of the candidates made sexist comments to Neeti Mohan during the show. After this, she appeared to walk out of the stage, referring to the statements as “rude.” The judges labelled it as a “prank” when the participants were concerned. While they laughed it off, it did not sit well with numerous gender activists and sparked debate on ‘MeToo’ on social media. Several gender activists also criticized 3 of them for this kind of insensitive pranks.
