Russia said on Friday that it anticipates India’s backing at the United Nations Security Council when the council considers a critical resolution on Russia’s military action in Ukraine.

Russia’s Charge d’affaires, Roman Babushkin, stated that India has a thorough grasp of the factors that led to the current crisis in Ukraine and that Moscow expects continuous assistance from New Delhi in line with the two countries’ unique and special strategic alliance.

The United Nations Security Council is set to vote on a draught resolution on Russia’s military action in Ukraine and the worsening crisis in the eastern European country on Friday evening. Babushkin stated, “We highly appreciate India’s deep understanding of the current situation as well as the reasons that led to it. We expect India to support Russia at the UN Security Council.”

The Russian envoy also praised India’s attitude and highlighted to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s remarks three days earlier in Paris that the issue in Ukraine is rooted in post-Soviet politics and the expansion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Babushkin said, “India’s position has been very balanced and independent. We appreciate it and we continue to expect India’s support in sync with the special and privileged strategic partnership between the two countries.”

The draft resolution is expected to denounce Russia’s military action in Ukraine, which has sparked widespread concern among Western nations.
