Zohran Mamdani has made history by becoming the new mayor of New York City. At just 34 years old, he won against former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Silwa. More than 2 million people voted, marking the highest voter turnout since 1969. People across the city and the world are celebrating his victory.
Zohran was born in Uganda to Mahmood Mamdani, an academic, and Mira Nair, a famous filmmaker. His family moved to South Africa when he was five and later to the United States when he was seven. He went to the Bronx High School of Science and later studied Africana Studies at Bowdoin College, graduating in 2014.
Before politics, Zohran had an interesting career. He worked as a house counselor and even performed as a hip hop musician. He eventually moved into politics, starting as a campaign manager for Khader El-Yateem and Ross Barkan. In 2020, he was elected to the New York State Assembly, defeating five-term incumbent Aravella Simotas. He was re-elected in 2022 and 2024, building his reputation as a strong and dedicated public servant.
Zohran announced his run for mayor in October 2024. During the campaign, his speech calling out Donald Trump for exploiting tax loopholes went viral. He promised to fight corruption and ensure fairness in taxation. His win is being celebrated not only as a political milestone but also as a personal triumph for his family. His mother, Mira Nair, would surely be proud of his achievement.
