Selena Gomez is days away from saying “I do” to Benny Blanco, but before her big day, the actress opened up in a heartfelt conversation with Allure. The Monte Carlo star got candid about her struggles with weight, fat-shaming, and how therapy has been helping her heal.
Selena admitted that she has always been very sensitive about her health and body image. She revealed that people’s comments about her weight often left her hurt and confused. She recalled one moment when someone called her fat, and it triggered a flood of emotions. At the time, she couldn’t figure out why the comment stung so deeply, but with therapy, she began to understand.
The Only Murders in the Building actress shared that she turned to dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), which is a type of talk therapy designed for people who feel emotions very strongly. Through it, Selena started to peel back the layers of her feelings and connect them to past experiences. She realized that much of her pain was rooted in a time when she was dealing with medical issues that caused her to gain weight.
This wasn’t the first time Selena has spoken about her mental health journey. She was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2020 and has also dealt with anxiety and depression. Opening up, she said that DBT has helped her find clarity and cope with those difficult emotions more gently.
On a brighter note, Selena is looking ahead to her wedding with Benny Blanco. The couple has kept the details of the ceremony secret, but she did celebrate with a glamorous bachelorette trip surrounded by her close friends.
