The terror in Derry is far from over. Following the successful eight-episode run of Season 1, which concluded in December 2025, the IT prequel series has officially shifted focus to its next chapter. While HBO has been methodical with formal announcements, the creative team has confirmed that the expansion into Derry’s macabre history is already in motion, moving further back into the town’s cursed timeline.

It: Welcome to Derry Season 2 Release Date Rumors

While a specific premiere date has not been locked in, production updates indicate that Season 2 is currently in pre-production. Filming is scheduled to begin in March 2026, with production returning to Ontario to recreate the unsettling streets of Derry. Given the extensive post-production required for the series’ high-end visual effects, industry insiders project a late 2027 or early 2028 release window. HBO CEO Casey Bloys recently described the show as a “huge success,” signaling that while the studio is taking its time to “get the material right,” the project is on a fast track compared to traditional prestige drama cycles.

It: Welcome to Derry Season 2 Expected Cast

The casting strategy for Season 2 will be a mix of returning supernatural forces and a fresh ensemble of period-specific characters.

  • Bill Skarsgård: Confirmed to return as Pennywise/IT, serving as the connective tissue across all timelines.

  • Returning Connections: Because Season 2 will jump back to 1935, many Season 1 human characters will not return. However, characters established in flashbacks, such as a younger Ingrid Kersh (previously played by Tyner Rushing), are expected to feature more prominently.

  • New Ensemble: Casting calls for the 1935 era are currently underway. Rumors suggest the production is looking for actors to portray the infamous Bradley Gang, a group of outlaws whose violent end is a staple of Derry’s lore.

  • The Creative Team: Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti, and Jason Fuchs remain at the helm, ensuring the visual and tonal continuity of the IT cinematic universe remains intact.

It: Welcome to Derry Season 2 Potential Plot

Season 2 is set to move the clock back 27 years from the first season’s 1962 setting, landing squarely in 1935. This era allows the show to explore one of the most violent periods mentioned in Stephen King’s original novel: the Bradley Gang Massacre. According to co-creator Andy Muschietti, “The Bradley Gang is coming in hot,” suggesting the season will focus on the bloody shootout between local townspeople and a group of fugitives, an event heavily influenced by Pennywise’s influence on the town’s psyche.

The narrative is expected to lean into the “Great Depression” atmosphere of Derry, exploring how economic despair and social tension provided the perfect feeding ground for the entity. Additionally, the plot will further unravel the origins of Pennywise, specifically focusing on how the creature began to integrate itself into the town’s foundational history. With Season 1 having touched on the “Black Spot” fire, Season 2 is poised to deliver a darker, more action-oriented look at the cyclical nature of Derry’s evil during one of its most desperate decades.

As per reports, the showrunners have a three-season plan that continues to move backward in time, with a potential Season 3 aimed at 1908. While an official greenlight announcement from HBO is expected by summer 2026, the current pre-production momentum suggests the studio is fully committed to the Muschiettis’ vision for the franchise.
