General Sadio Camara, Mali’s Minister of Defence, has died after multiple coordinated attacks were carried out on MILITARY SITES ALL OVER MALI, according to sources who spoke with Al Jazeera.

This wave of attacks started with a suicide car bomb that exploded at Camara’s house in Kati, a heavily fortified garrison town only 15km from Bamako, where INTERIM PRESIDENT ASSIMI GOÏTA also resides. This has NEVER HAPPENED before—It represented the first time that anyone has successfully breached one of Mali’s most secure military installations.

The assailants are reported to be part of an UNLIKELY ALLIANCE between Al-Qaeda’s Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin and Tuareg Rebels belonging to the Azawad Liberation Front; these groups used to be rivals, but they formed a formal coalition last year. THIS EVENT MARKS THE FORMAL ACTIVATION OF THIS ALLIANCE’S DEADLY OPERATIONS.

General Camara was the principal architect behind the coups in Mali during 2020 / 2021; many people thought that he could have led the military he was involved with—the junta. According to Nicolas Haque from Al Jazeera, “He was one of the most critical leaders of the current leadership.” His death has created a significant POWER VACUUM in Mali.

Simultaneous attacks occurred in Bamako, Gao, Kidal, and Sevare and reflect the size and coordination of the overall offensive. For Mali’s transitional government, which has already been engaged in an insurgency throughout the Sahel, the impact of this loss is both symbolic and strategic.

This act is not simply an assassination; it also represents a proclamation. The fact that armed groups have now banded together against the state establishes that there is a growing and persistent threat to the security of the region. With French forces having recently withdrawn from their operations and other forms of international cooperation having begun to erode, Mali sees itself at an unprecedented crossroads.

Camara is no longer alive. The alliance aimed at removing Bamako has been created. The Sahel’s continued security crisis is now entering into yet another chapter marked by increasing levels of darkness.
