Angelina Jolie spoke at the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain ahead of her movie “Couture.” She plays Maxine, an American filmmaker who learns she has cancer. During the press conference, she was asked what she fears as an artist and an American. Jolie paused, sighed, and said it was a very difficult question.

She said she loves her country but doesn’t recognize it right now. She explained that she has always lived internationally, her family and friends are international, and her worldview is global. She added that anything that limits freedom or divides people is dangerous. She stressed that these are serious times, and people need to be careful with their words.

Jolie has previously said she wants to leave the U.S. and move abroad. She explained that she has stayed in Los Angeles only because of her custody arrangement with her youngest children, twins Vivienne and Knox, who are 17. Once they turn 18, she plans to relocate.

She said she wants privacy for her big family, which also includes Maddox, 24; Pax, 21; Zahara, 20; and Shiloh, 19. Jolie mentioned that while she has a home in Los Angeles to raise her children, the humanity she has seen around the world is different from what she grew up with in the U.S.

Jolie said she plans to spend time in Cambodia and visit family around the world. A source told People magazine that she is preparing to sell her Los Angeles home and relocate as soon as her twins turn 18. The source added that Jolie never wanted to live full-time in L.A., but she had to because of custody requirements.

The source said Jolie will be very happy to leave Los Angeles and is considering several locations abroad. Her lawyer confirmed that her divorce from Brad Pitt, which started in 2016, was finalized last December. Jolie has focused on finding peace and healing for her family and avoids speaking ill of Pitt publicly or privately.

Her children have grown up seeing the challenges of power and privilege, and Jolie encourages them to focus on changing laws rather than telling public stories. She wants her family’s future to be peaceful and secure while she continues to live her life internationally.
