Tom Hiddleston and Zawe Ashton have been together for three years, but rumors about whether the couple had secretly tied the knot have kept fans buzzing. Now, Ashton herself has put the speculation to rest.
During her appearance on the Miss Me? podcast, the Velvet Buzzsaw actress revealed that while she and the Loki star have been engaged for some time, they have not yet exchanged vows. The chatter intensified earlier this year when the couple revealed they were expecting their second child, but Ashton made it clear that marriage has not happened—at least not yet.
Ashton explained that while they aren’t married, she and Hiddleston often call each other “husband” and “wife” in private. For them, “boyfriend” and “girlfriend” simply didn’t feel right anymore. “It is the practicing [of] calling each other husband and wife. It is looking down at the ring finger and being like, ‘Okay, this is the tradition that is potentially gonna come with this first yes,’” she said.
The actress admitted that while the habit feels natural, it occasionally draws playful reactions. “It’s also pissing off people who are actually marrying. You realize that’s just not real yet. And so, yeah,” Ashton joked during the conversation.
Despite the pet names, Ashton admitted that she and Hiddleston have different ideas about what marriage might look like, and the thought of it still feels a little daunting. “We’ve thought about marriage in our own ways, but the reality of it is scary,” she confessed.
While marriage may not be on the immediate horizon, the couple’s focus right now is on growing their family. Ashton revealed her baby bump at the SXSW Festival in London this June, confirming they are expecting their second child together.
Meanwhile, Hiddleston is juggling fatherhood with his Marvel commitments, currently filming Avengers: Doomsday, where he will reprise his fan-favorite role as Loki.
