Katy Perry appeared to subtly reference her recent breakup with Orlando Bloom during an emotionally charged moment on stage in Inglewood, California, on July 15. The pop star, known for blending vulnerability with humor, was performing as part of her current tour when a fan request led her to sing Not Like the Movies, a deeply personal ballad she originally penned after her first divorce. Before beginning the performance, Perry looked out at the crowd and remarked, “You’re gonna make me sing this song in this time in my life?” adding, “OK, we’ll do it! Because you voted for it.”
Perry then gave a bit more context to the song’s selection. She explained that for each country she visits on tour, she assigns a particular album to reflect that country’s spirit. For the U.S., she chose Teenage Dream, calling it a symbol of youthful magic. “You could be a teenage dream baby. You better get it together. I’ll always have that feeling for you,” she told the audience.
Before diving into the song, the 39-year-old reflected on its origin, stating, “This next song I wrote in my 20s…after my first divorce.” She lightened the mood with a dose of her signature wit, joking, “I’ll try and hold my composure while I sing it a week before my period.” Though she never explicitly named Bloom, the emotional weight of the moment—combined with the timing and song choice—led fans to believe she was processing their recent split in real time, with music as her outlet.
Perry’s performance came shortly after reports confirmed the end of her long relationship with actor Orlando Bloom. According to US Weekly, the two quietly called off their engagement in June after nearly ten years of being in each other’s lives. A source noted that while the breakup was sad, it was mutual and not contentious. “Katy is, of course, upset but is relieved to not have to go through another divorce,” the source shared, referencing her past split from Russell Brand in 2012.
The couple’s journey together began in 2016, and although they broke up briefly in 2017, they reconciled in 2018, leading to a proposal in 2019. Perry opened up about their rocky beginnings during an appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast in 2024, revealing they had very different mindsets when they first met. “We weren’t really in it from day one,” she said, noting that Bloom had just completed a period of celibacy while she was freshly out of another relationship.
Despite going their separate ways romantically, Perry and Bloom remain committed to co-parenting their 4-year-old daughter, Daisy Dove. Sources say they’re in regular contact and focused on their daughter’s wellbeing. In fact, Bloom recently brought Daisy to see Perry on tour before he made an appearance at Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez’s wedding.
Though she didn’t say much outright, Perry’s Inglewood performance reminded fans that behind the pop star persona is a woman navigating heartbreak, parenting, and personal growth—all with resilience and a little humor.
