Lee Byung Hun has expressed clear interest in reprising his role as The Front Man in a potential Squid Game spin-off, particularly one that delves into the character’s murky backstory. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the actor revealed that he and director Hwang Dong Hyuk have often joked about a Front Man spin-off since the early stages of the series. They agree the character—and others like the recruiter—still have many unexplored layers that could make for a compelling narrative.
While nothing has been officially confirmed, Lee Byung Hun’s enthusiasm for the idea is evident. He said he’d be “very willing” to star in such a project, noting that the character is already deeply established and intriguing. He added that just like fans, he’s curious about The Front Man’s motivations and history, and that telling his story would be something he’d enjoy.
As for Squid Game 3, the final season left the door open for future narratives. Lee Byung Hun’s character survived, and the story wrapped with him delivering Seong Gi Hun’s prize money to his family. Meanwhile, Player 222’s baby inherited the rest of the winnings, with Wi Ha Joon’s character, Hwang Jun Ho, stepping in as the child’s guardian. Cate Blanchett’s mysterious appearance, seemingly taking over the recruiter role after Gong Yoo’s character’s exit, added another intriguing element that hints at more stories to come.
While director Hwang Dong Hyuk has denied involvement in the upcoming American adaptation reportedly being planned by David Fincher, he has shown past interest in telling stories set between seasons 1 and 2, specifically focusing on Seong Gi Hun’s transformation and investigations post-victory. With lingering questions, uncharted character arcs, and strong global interest, a spin-off centered around The Front Man remains a strong possibility.
