Miley Cyrus is opening up about the long-standing emotional rifts that have shaped her family and how they eventually found healing without ever stepping into a therapy session. In a deeply personal interview on Monica Lewinsky’s Reclaiming podcast, the 32-year-old singer reflected on the “messy” but ultimately redemptive process of rebuilding fractured ties with her parents and siblings. Miley acknowledged that during her peak Hannah Montana fame, her family was not only overwhelmed by the spotlight but also divided, to the point where many weren’t speaking at all. She shared that following her parents’ divorce in 2022, those divisions grew deeper, with loyalties splitting and relationships strained. Miley admitted to feeling particularly close to her mother, Tish, during that period, while tensions around her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, lingered.
With siblings from both sides — Brandi, Trace, Braison, Noah, and Cody — the family dynamic became increasingly tangled. Miley candidly described the idea of organizing counseling sessions as impossible, joking that “just to get each other into a room to get to counseling would have been a war.” Instead of seeking outside help, she took it upon herself to be the one to break the cycle. She explained how she began to reconnect by simply inviting family members to spend time together, letting emotional conversations unfold naturally once the atmosphere was warm and open. She compared their emotional backlog to hoarding, saying that issues had “stacked” so high, it became difficult to know where to begin.
Rather than confront the mountain of unresolved pain all at once, Miley opted for simplicity — laughter, joy, and shared presence. From that place, space was created for honesty and understanding to return. She described this effort as one of the most meaningful parts of her year, rebuilding the lines of communication that had been lost over time. Now, with relationships mended and mutual understanding deepened, Miley is turning that experience into art. Her upcoming album will feature a song titled “Secrets,” which touches on the long-silenced truths that once haunted her family. Through it all, she emphasizes that the healing didn’t come from therapy, but from showing up, being vulnerable, and choosing connection over conflict.
