Emma Stone recently opened up about a surprising challenge she faced while preparing for her role in Eddington, Ari Aster’s new film set during the COVID-19 era. Playing Louise, the wife of Joaquin Phoenix’s Sheriff character, Stone talked about how researching her role led her into some unexpected territory — and how the internet’s algorithm ended up freaking her out a bit.
At the Cannes Film Festival, where she walked the red carpet and spoke with Variety, Emma explained, “The only additional thing that scared me a little bit was the algorithm system. When I started looking up things related to the film, stuff that hadn’t been in my online feeds before, the algorithm picked up on it.”
She went on, “Once you start Googling, it’s like falling down a rabbit hole, and you keep seeing more and more crazy stuff. Unfortunately, I’m still getting fed some wild things by the algorithm.” It sounds like diving into the film’s themes came with some unexpected digital baggage!
Eddington had its premiere at the festival the night before and wowed the audience with a five-minute standing ovation. Alongside Emma and Joaquin Phoenix, the movie stars Pedro Pascal and Austin Butler.
The story gives a fresh, tense look at the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on how neighbors in the small town of Eddington, New Mexico, become increasingly divided, turning against one another.
Pedro Pascal also shared how he prepared for his role. He told Variety that he binge-watched seasons of David E. Kelley’s show The Practice on Hulu to get into the mindset, as well as reality TV shows about airports where people lose their cool or scramble to move their belongings using budget airlines. Pascal said, “I was educating myself,” showing his unique approach to understanding his character.
Eddington is scheduled to hit theaters on July 18, promising a gripping and timely story about fear, division, and survival during a difficult time.
