Hailey Bieber is facing a lot of criticism online after fans noticed that her speech sounded almost exactly like something Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber’s ex-girlfriend, said before.
On Thursday, Hailey, who is 28 and owns the beauty brand Rhode, accepted the Beauty Innovator award at the Daily Front Row’s 9th Annual Fashion Awards. During her speech, she said, “When I started Rhode, I didn’t want to start a brand for the sake of starting a brand. I really wanted to create an entire world.”
But some sharp-eyed fans quickly pointed out that Hailey’s words were very similar to something Selena Gomez said back in 2021 in an interview about her own brand, Rare Beauty. Selena said, “I didn’t want to launch a makeup line for the sake of launching a brand. What interests me is cultivating beauty from the inside.”
When people saw the two statements side by side, many started criticizing Hailey for copying Selena. Comments like “She copies everything” and “Creepy stalker copycat” flooded social media. Some fans even brought up past moments when Hailey was accused of copying Selena.
However, not everyone agreed. Some people defended Hailey, saying the words used are common phrases many celebrities use when talking about their brands. One person commented, “Many other celebrities say things like this. They want to show they aren’t just launching another ‘celebrity company.’” Another suggested that both women might have been guided by their public relations teams on what to say.
For some background, Selena Gomez dated Justin Bieber for several years before they split up in 2018. Hailey married Justin later that same year.
Meanwhile, rumors have been swirling that Hailey and Justin’s marriage is going through a tough time. Justin recently took to social media to shut down those rumors. He said he doesn’t like people spreading false stories about him and Hailey, and jokingly mentioned it’s hard not to get jealous when their life is “going brazzzzyy.”
