Lady Gaga set the internet buzzing this week after a short-lived—and now deleted—post from her official X account (formerly Twitter) seemed to throw shade at Katy Perry’s recent space adventure. The tweet, which was up only briefly, read: “I’ve had farts longer than that.”
Even though it disappeared quickly, screenshots of the post began circulating online, and fans instantly began speculating. Was Gaga poking fun at Perry’s spaceflight? Many thought so. One user summed up the mood with the comment, “Where’s the lie in this tweet?” suggesting that while the joke was a bit harsh, it wasn’t entirely inaccurate.
To be clear, Lady Gaga hasn’t confirmed whether she actually posted the message or if someone else may have been responsible, but that didn’t stop the internet from having a field day.
So what exactly happened with Katy Perry’s flight?
On Monday, April 14, Perry joined Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin team for a brief 10-minute trip to space. The mission also included CBS News anchor Gayle King and Lauren Sánchez, Bezos’ fiancée. The rocket traveled just beyond the Kármán line, which marks the edge of space, before returning safely to Texas.
Online reactions were, unsurprisingly, all over the place. Some mocked how short the flight was, comparing it to a long elevator ride. Others criticized the environmental impact and questioned the point of such “vanity trips.” One user wrote, “Today Katy Perry burned more emissions than Taylor Swift did during the entire Eras Tour,” while another said, “Thinking ‘we have to protect our mother’ about Earth after a vanity space flight… is just so funny.”
Leading up to the launch, Perry had promoted both the mission and her new album, 143. In interviews, she spoke about her fascination with the cosmos. “I was winding down from a tour rehearsal, listening to Carl Sagan’s Cosmos and reading about string theory,” she told AP News. She also said she’s long been interested in astronomy, astrophysics, and even astrology—“all things stars,” as she put it.
During the flight, Perry even showed off her tour setlist, blending her space journey with promotion for her Lifetimes Tour. She told Elle magazine that going to space had been a lifelong dream and that she’d explored multiple commercial flight options to make it happen.
