Katy Perry made history by blasting off into space as part of an all-female crew aboard Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin rocket on April 14. The pop sensation was joined by CBS Mornings anchor Gayle King, activist Amanda Nguyen, rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, film producer Kerianne Flynn, and Bezos’ fiancée, Lauren Sánchez. The mission, which launched from Blue Origin’s West Texas facility, marked a significant moment as the first-ever all-women crew to travel into space.
The rocket, named New Shepard, traveled over 62 miles into the atmosphere, surpassing the Kármán line, which is recognized as the boundary of space. During the mission, the passengers experienced several minutes of weightlessness and witnessed breathtaking views of Earth. The capsule containing the crew landed safely a few minutes after the rocket was suspended by three parachutes.
Ahead of the launch, Perry took to social media to share her excitement, calling the moment “historical.” She expressed how deeply moved she felt by the mission, saying, “You never know the amount of love you have inside of you until the day you launch.” She also teased a special reveal from zero gravity, much to the anticipation of her fans.
In true Katy Perry style, she couldn’t resist the opportunity to bring her musical flair to the mission. She jokingly remarked, “I gotta sing in space,” before reflecting on the significance of the event. Perry emphasized that while the moment was a personal milestone for her, the mission was ultimately about protecting Earth, stating, “From up there, we will think, ‘Oh my God, we have to protect our mother.’”
This milestone marks not just a new chapter in space exploration, but also Perry’s ability to merge her passion for performance with important environmental advocacy, as she continues to make waves both on and off Earth.
