Katy Perry, alongside broadcast journalist Gayle King and other women, has made a historic return to Earth after an incredible journey into space. As soon as she stepped off the space vehicle, the pop star paused to kiss and touch the ground, a heartfelt gesture to show her deep gratitude for the Earth.

The space flight, organized by Blue Origin, launched at 9 a.m. and lasted just under eight minutes in space. The passengers, including Lauren Sanchez—who is engaged to Jeff Bezos—traveled 62 miles above the Karman Line, which marks the official boundary of space. After the brief journey, the capsule containing the passengers deployed three parachutes and gently landed a few minutes later than the flight itself.

Before the flight, Katy Perry had shared in a CBS interview that the mission wasn’t just about her—it was about the Earth and the people who live on it. She explained, “It won’t be about me; it will be about this beautiful Earth. I think from up there, we will think, ‘Oh my God, we have to protect our mother.’”

In the days leading up to the flight, Katy had hinted on social media that she would sing during the journey. True to her word, she did sing, though the audio wasn’t very clear during the live stream. Later, Gayle King confirmed that Perry had been singing the classic song What a Wonderful World.

Lauren Sanchez, who played a key role in choosing the women for the space flight, spoke with Elle and explained, “All of these women are storytellers in their own right. They’re going to go up to space and be able to spread what they felt in different ways.”

Gayle King, who was also onboard, expressed a mix of excitement and nerves before the flight. She shared with CBS News, “I’ve made no secret of the fact that I’m very nervous but also very excited.”

The trip was part of a commercial venture, aimed at promoting space tourism and advancing the space tourism industry. It’s part of a growing trend where celebrities and civilians alike are given the opportunity to explore the wonders of space.
