Prince Harry has been grappling with a tough situation involving his security ever since he stepped down from his royal duties alongside his wife, Meghan Markle. When they made that decision, they lost their automatic, state-funded security, and Harry has been fighting ever since to secure proper protection for himself and his family when they visit the UK.
Recently, Harry went back to his home country to plead his case in court, hoping to regain the level of security he feels is necessary for his safety. But so far, things haven’t gone his way. In an interview with People magazine, the Duke of Sussex opened up about how “exhausted and overwhelmed” he feels by the whole process. After leaving court on April 9, he admitted that his “worst fears have been confirmed” by the legal proceedings.
Harry has been closely following the case, taking notes as it unfolded over two days at London’s Royal Courts of Justice. Reflecting on the past, he shared that when he and Meghan made their decision to step back from royal life, they were hoping to still be able to support the monarchy from abroad. They thought they’d found a peaceful solution that would allow them to live their lives without being in the spotlight, while still maintaining security.
He explained, “We were trying to create this happy house,” but when they left the royal family, they did so under the belief that their security would continue. In fact, court documents reportedly showed that the late Queen Elizabeth supported their need for “effective security.”
But then, out of the blue, the government committee responsible for state-funded protection, RAVEC, decided to remove their security. This has led to Harry’s ongoing battle to get his security reinstated.
As the legal proceedings have continued, Harry has come to realize just how far the authorities are willing to go to keep him from getting the security he believes he’s entitled to. He admitted that this realization has been “difficult to swallow” and that it was the final straw for him. It’s clear that this ongoing struggle has weighed heavily on him, and it looks like he’s not backing down anytime soon.
