At Cirque du Soleil’s KOOZA premiere in Los Angeles on October 24, Tim Allen made a fun comparison between his return to television and Tom Brady’s NFL comeback. Allen, who rose to fame as Tim Taylor on Home Improvement in the ’90s, said the show’s popularity with audiences still amazes him. He likened his return to television with Last Man Standing and his current work in new projects to Brady’s celebrated comeback with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, joking, “I feel like Tom Brady—I’m doing another one.”
A long-standing career in TV and film
After Home Improvement ended, Allen focused on movies for over a decade before returning to the small screen with Last Man Standing in 2011, where he played Mike Baxter for nine successful seasons. Recently, he reprised his role as Scott Calvin in The Santa Clauses series on Disney+. Allen shared he’s thrilled to keep entertaining and that his latest project, Shifting Gears, will premiere in 2025, marking yet another TV comeback for the star.
New roles, old favorites, and family inspiration
In Shifting Gears, Allen portrays a widowed classic car workshop owner whose life turns comedic when his daughter, played by Kat Dennings, returns with her own teenage daughter. Beyond this project, Allen remains open to reuniting with former co-stars. With fans still hoping for a Home Improvement revival, Allen hinted he’s “all in” if his former on-screen wife Patricia Richardson is as well.
While Shifting Gears excites audiences, Allen’s voice role as Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story 5, set for a 2026 release, remains a top fan favorite. Though details are still under wraps, Allen reassured fans he’s ready for new adventures with Buzz and hinted that Disney has “plans in place” for the franchise.
