Sophie Turner, renowned for her portrayal of Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, embarked on a whirlwind romance with Joe Jonas, the heartthrob of the Jonas Brothers, in 2016. Despite their six-year age gap, the couple tied the knot in 2019, when Turner was just 20 years old. Their union blossomed with the arrival of their first child, Willa, in the summer of 2020, followed by the birth of their second daughter, Delphine, two years later.
However, amidst the glitz and glamour of their celebrity status, Turner found herself grappling with a label she detested: being referred to solely as the “wife” of Joe Jonas. In a candid interview with British Vogue, Turner bared her soul, shedding light on her disdain for the public’s perception of her role in the relationship.
Despite her stellar acting career, which earned her a Primetime Emmy Awards nomination in 2019 and iconic roles such as Jean Grey in the X-Men franchise, Turner felt overshadowed by the spotlight cast on her marital status. She expressed frustration at being reduced to a mere accessory to her husband’s fame, particularly when compared to the other Jonas Brothers’ spouses—actress and former Miss World Priyanka Chopra, married to Nick, and Danielle Jonas, wedded to Kevin.
Turner revealed, “There was a lot of attention on the three brothers and the wives. Well, we were always called the wives, and I hated that.” Her discomfort stemmed from the feeling of being relegated to a secondary role, a mere “plus-one” rather than an individual with her own achievements and identity.
Despite Turner’s grievances, she emphasized that Joe Jonas never made her feel inferior; rather, it was the external perception of their relationship that troubled her. She lamented the notion that she and the other Jonas wives were perceived as mere “groupies” in the band, longing for recognition beyond their marital ties.
Interestingly, Turner and her fellow Jonas wives shared a strong bond, often publicly supporting their partners together and affectionately dubbing themselves the “J-sisters.” However, with Turner’s separation from Joe Jonas, the dynamics within this close-knit group have inevitably shifted, casting a new light on their once-affectionate moniker.
