When two of the most prominent female rappers collaborate on a song, you get a surefire hit! Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion have joined forces once again for Cardi’s latest track, “Bongos.” Let’s delve into its meaning.
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve likely heard Megan and Cardi’s initial collaboration, “WAP.” This 2020 hit made waves with its explicit lyrics, and its music video featured notable figures like Kylie Jenner, Normani, and others, further boosting its popularity. It claimed the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and swiftly became the anthem of the summer. Given Cardi and Megan’s track record, it’s no surprise that when Cardi was working on “Bongos,” Megan immediately came to mind for a feature.
During an interview with DJ Whoo Kid on his podcast “Whoo’s House,” prior to the song’s release, Cardi expressed how she instinctively felt that Megan was the perfect addition to the new track. She stated, “I hear her [Megan] on this. I know it.” When the “Hot Girl Summer” rapper sent over her verse, it solidified Cardi’s belief that she had made the right choice in featuring Megan on the song. Released in early September 2023, while it hasn’t achieved the same level of success as “WAP,” it remains an enjoyable track with equally explicit content.
“Bongos” is unequivocally about sex. Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion left no detail unexplored in their intimate lives with “WAP,” and they continue in the same vein with their second collaboration. Although “Bongos” may seem like a sequel to “WAP,” Cardi assures that it’s not. She explained on the “Whoo’s House” podcast, “I wonder how people are gonna react to this vibe because they’re really like expecting ‘WAP,’ like, ‘oh, here they go again talking this and that. We are talking a little, you know, about some p***y, but not like ‘WAP’ type of stuff.” Cardi candidly acknowledges the focus on sex in the song, evident in the explicit lyrics.
Megan’s feature further affirms the song’s emphasis on sex. She raps, “My back shots sound like bongos / I ain’t scared to admit I’m a freak h**.” Megan’s verse employs slang for a specific sex position, openly expressing her enjoyment of intimacy. “Bongos” leaves no room for ambiguity, offering a vivid portrayal of Cardi and Megan’s love lives set to a lively drumbeat.
Beyond its explicit content, “Bongos” also appears to serve as a farewell to the rappers’ detractors. Throughout the track, Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion throw shade at those who may not be supporters of their work. Cardi kicks off with lines like, “Every time I turn around, a b***h pissed off (Ah-ha) / Little dusty-a** h*** need a lint brush (Woo),” essentially dismissing various forms of negativity. Both Cardi and Megan have experienced their fair share of haters, and in “Bongos,” they address them head-on, making it clear that they won’t tolerate any disrespect.
