As Crunchyroll joins the trend of price adjustments seen across major streaming platforms like Netflix, Disney Plus, and Prime Video, anime fans worldwide are facing the reality of increased subscription costs. Despite being regarded as a niche interest for years, the surge in demand for anime content has led to significant changes in the streaming landscape.

With its monopoly on anime streaming and limited competitors in the genre, Crunchyroll’s dominance became even more pronounced after its acquisitions of Funimation, VRV, and Wakanim in 2022. These platforms were the primary distributors of anime in the Western market. Following the merger of Wakanim and VRV with Crunchyroll in 2023, Funimation is set to follow suit in 2025.

In tandem with its merger with Funimation, Crunchyroll introduced a revamped pricing structure, marking a departure from its previous subscription plans.

Under the new pricing model, Crunchyroll’s yearly subscription will increase to $99.99, up from the previous rate of $54.95 per year. This represents an 81% increase in subscription costs, slated to take effect from January 28, 2025. However, users can continue to enjoy the lower subscription price throughout 2024 before the transition.

While the prospect of paying $100 for the platform may seem daunting, it’s important to note that Crunchyroll does not subject its users to advertisements. In contrast, other streaming platforms like Netflix offer a standard plan with ads for $6.99 per month, equating to $83.88 annually.

Moreover, Crunchyroll provides additional perks such as a 14-day trial period, allowing users to assess the value of the subscription. The platform also offers a free tier plan, allowing users to watch seasonal samplers comprising three episodes at no cost. With over 1300 anime titles available, Crunchyroll remains a unique destination for anime enthusiasts, despite the increased subscription fee.

In essence, while the price hike may deter some subscribers, Crunchyroll’s expansive anime library and ad-free viewing experience continue to set it apart in the streaming landscape.
