Libs of TikTok is a controversial TikTok account founded by Chaya Raichik, a former real estate agent. The account gained notoriety for spreading transphobia, homophobia, and misinformation about progressive, LGBTQ+, and other minority groups. Raichik has been accused of using the platform to target and attempt to get LGBTQ+ individuals, particularly queer teachers, fired from their jobs.
The account became a focal point for far-right conspiracy theories, and it received attention from figures like Joe Rogan, further increasing its popularity. Libs of TikTok has been involved in reporting on and falsely accusing drag queens and LGBTQ+ resource centers, leading to far-right protests.
In 2022, Libs of TikTok faced criticism for making false claims about the Boston Children’s Hospital, accusing it of providing gender-affirming hysterectomies to minors. The false information led to death threats against physicians, staff, and patients at the hospital, as well as bomb threats. The account has been linked to threats, violence, and acts of terrorism, such as the May 2023 mass shooting in Allen, TX.
Reports from Vice allege that the Kremlin has supported Raichik’s videos as part of its anti-LGBTQ+ smear campaigns. Raichik is banned from TikTok and was shadowbanned on Twitter until Elon Musk’s purchase of the platform allowed restricted accounts to return.
While there are calls to permanently ban Libs of TikTok, it remains a prominent extreme right-wing account. The account’s existence contributes to increased scrutiny and dehumanization of trans and gender-diverse people. The outcome of Raichik’s de-platforming remains uncertain, but the account has faced criticism for its harmful content and impact on marginalized communities.
