Matt LaFleur is not coaching for his job this weekend.
Despite speculation surrounding his future, the Green Bay Packers head coach is expected to remain in place beyond this postseason. That is the view of NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
LaFleur is entering the final year of his current contract in 2026. Even so, Rapoport reports that the Packers plan to open contract extension talks shortly after the team’s season ends.
According to the report, the goal on both sides is to reach a new deal. Team sources have indicated that LaFleur’s job security is not tied to the outcome of Saturday night’s playoff game.
The Packers face the Chicago Bears in the Wild Card Round at 8 PM ET on Prime Video. LaFleur’s contract situation has been a lingering storyline heading into the matchup.
Rapoport stated that LaFleur is not coaching under pressure to save his job. He added that while recent coaching firings around the league show that nothing is ever guaranteed, Green Bay’s stance remains firm for now.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter has backed up that reporting. Schefter said he also expects the Packers to extend both LaFleur and general manager Brian Gutekunst.
LaFleur has compiled a 76 40 1 record across 7 seasons as Green Bay’s head coach. The Packers have posted winning records in 6 of those seasons and have reached the playoffs all but once.
The team has won 3 postseason games during that span. However, Green Bay has not reached the Super Bowl under LaFleur.
After opening his tenure with three straight 13 win seasons, the Packers have gone 37 30 1 since. That stretch has been viewed by some as solid but unspectacular.
Those results led to speculation that both LaFleur and Gutekunst could be under scrutiny. Current reporting suggests that is not the case.
Unless something changes before the season ends, Green Bay is expected to move forward with its current leadership. An extension for LaFleur appears likely, with the possibility of a longer term commitment beyond next season.
