Air India, currently undergoing a major transformation, expects to complete the upgradation of its legacy wide-body aircraft by mid-2027, according to CEO and MD Campbell Wilson. Speaking at the Skift India Forum, Wilson emphasized that while the airline is making significant progress, global supply constraints are slowing down the process.

  • Aircraft Upgradation Timeline:
Air India had planned to refit its Boeing 777 wide-body aircraft last year but faced seat supply delays. The airline is now accelerating its heavy refresh program, with all legacy wide-body aircraft set to be upgraded by early to mid-2027.
  • Vistara Integration:
Following its merger with Vistara, Air India expects to complete the repainting and refurbishing of Vistara aircraft within the next 1.5 years.
  • First-Class Cabins:
Wilson confirmed that some new aircraft will feature first-class cabins, even though first-class seating is generally less profitable than business class.
  • Supply Constraints in Aviation:
Wilson noted that the global aviation sector will likely remain supply-constrained for the next 4-5 years, impacting aircraft deliveries and upgrades.

Fleet Expansion and Future Plans

Since Tata Group took over operations of Air India, the airline has placed orders for 570 new aircraft, solidifying its position as a Tier-1 international carrier.

The modernization of Air India’s fleet is a crucial step in its transformation journey, ensuring improved passenger experience and positioning it as a leading global airline.
