Intense scenes emerge from New Delhi as Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were arrested while protesting against the hike in GST.
The situation escalated as Priyanka Gandhi broke the barricade and refused to cooperate with the city’s police. She tried to resist detention by sitting on the road but was finally dragged away by the police.
Along with her several Congress MPs and politicians including Mallikarjun Kharge, Jairam Ramesh and Ranjeet Ranjan were detained at Police Lines Kingsway Camp in Delhi.
The leaders of Congress were protesting against high inflation, unemployment, falling rupee and a hike in GST on several items. The leaders were on the way to Rashtrapati Bhavan and had plans to “gherao” the Prime Minister’s residence.
Congress was holding a massive protest despite not getting the green light from the Delhi Police.
Many Congress leaders and MPs wore black as a mark of protest.
“When we raise the voice of the people, the dictatorial regime gets scared. And out of fear, they behave like this. But Congress will not back down,” the official Twitter handle of the Congress party posted.
Priyanka Gandhi after getting dragged and detained said, “They (BJP) think Opposition can be muzzled. As their ministers can’t see inflation, we want to show them inflation by marching towards the PM house…PM Modi has handed over the assets of the country to his friends.”
Rahul Gandhi in a press conference said that India is witnessing the “death of democracy” and anyone who speaks up against it is viscously attacked.
While at the press conference he slammed the government by saying “Hitler had also won elections, he too used to win elections. How did he use to do it? He had control of all of Germany’s institutions…Give me the entire system, then I will show you how elections are won.”
