Nitish Kumar’s CM journey from 2000 till date

The leader of the JD(U) party, Nitish Kumar, has once more split the alliance, this time with the BJP led by PM Narendra Modi. Tuesday saw the resignation of the BJP-aligned chief minister of Bihar. The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), the Left, and the opposition Congress party in Bihar have simultaneously expressed unreserved support for Kumar and his JD (U). On Tuesday, Kumar, who had left the Congress-RJD coalition in 2017, urged Tejashwi Yadav, the RJD’s leader and the elder Yadav’s son, to “start a new chapter.”

  • In 2000, Nitish Kumar was first sworn in as the chief minister of Bihar in 2000. Due to his inability to demonstrate his majority, he served as CM for only one week.
  • In 2005, he then served out his term as the CM in 2005 after being sworn in for the second time.
  • In 2010, Nitish Kumar sworn in as Bihar’s CM for the 03rd time.
  • He left his office in 2014, and Jeetan Ram Manjhi served as the Chief Minister of Bihar until February 2015.
  • In February 2015, Nitish Kumar was appointed CM of the state again. For the fourth time, he took the oath.
  • In November 2015, after ‘The Mahagathbandhan’ won the assembly elections, Kumar was sworn in as Bihar’s chief executive for the fifth time.
  • In 2017, Kumar left the Mahagathbandhan and allied himself with the NDA. He was then sworn in as Bihar’s chief minister for the sixth time.
  • In 2020, JDU contested in the assembly elections in Bihar as an NDA ally. The seventh time Nitish Kumar has served as the chief minister of Bihar.
  • In 2022, tomorrow will mark his eighth swearing-in as the chief minister of Bihar.

On Tuesday, he once more resigned from the BJP-led NDA coalition. Additionally, he is prepared to establish a government with the backing of the Left, Congress, and RJD.

Nitish Kumar left the Raj Bhavan and went to the Patna home of Rabri Devi, Lalu Yadav’s wife, after submitting his resignation. The party’s MLAs and MPs all endorsed Kumar’s choice and expressed their solidarity with him. They also said that they will back Kumar’s choice going forward.

The RJD is the party with the most MLAs in the state assembly, which has an effective strength of 242 and needs 121 to have a majority. The BJP is second with 77 and the JD(U) is third with 44. Additionally, four MLAs from the Hindustani Awam Morcha of former Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi and an Independent back the JD(U). There are 19 MLAs in the Congress, 12 in the CPIML(L), and two each in the CPI and CPI(M). Additionally, one MLA is a member of Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM.
