The swachh survekshan 2020 was the fifth annual cleanliness survey of India. According to the Government of India a total of 4,242 cities, 62 Cantonment Boards and 97 Ganga towns were surveyed, and 1.87 crore citizens participated in the exercise.

Indore has been declared as the the cleanest city of India for the fourth time in a row. To achieve this position, The Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) took several initiatives. They formed 850 Self-Help Groups, comprising almost 8,500 women, to spread awareness for source segregation at home, conducted mass campaigns, including material recovery facility centres.
Surat jumped from 14th to second rank following some important waste management measures. According to to Dr. Swapnil Patel from Surat Municipal Corporation, Surat followed 3r Moto namely reduce reuse and recycle. They promoted waste segregation and management in households. Today over 1 lakh households of Surat are making compost on their own.

Ambikapur is a landfill free city as well because all the existing dumping grounds are converted into sanitary parks. Chhattisgarh is declared as the cleanest state of India.
