After a roller coaster ride in 2022, the Indian stock market has ushered in the new year 2023, and stock market holidays for the year 2023 have already been announced and shared on Indian bourses. According to the list of stock market holidays 2023, trading in stocks will be closed on 15 days, although in the list of stock market holidays 2022, the NSE and BSE were only closed on 13 days. As a result, the Indian secondary market will have two more trading holidays this year.
As with stock market holidays in 2022, there will be only one stock market holiday in January 2023, with no trading holidays in February 2023. The BSE and NSE will remain closed on January 26th for Republic Day celebrations across the country. After Republic Day, the next stock market holiday will be in March. Trading in the Equity Segment, Equity Derivative Segment, and SLB Segment will be suspended on Tuesday, March 7th.
The month of April 2023 will have the most stock market holidays, with three trade holidays. On April 4, 2023, equities trading will be suspended in observance of Mahavir Jayanti. Other stock market holidays in April 2023 have been set for April 07, 2023 (Good Friday) and April 14, 2023. (Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Jayanti).
One stock market holiday has been scheduled for May and June 20223. Trading at the BSE and NSE will be suspended on May 1, 2023, in honour of Maharashtra Day, and on June 28, 2023, in honour of Bakri Id.
There will be no stock market holiday in July 2023, but there will be one in August and September. On August 15, 2023, equity trading in India will be suspended due to the country’s Independence Day celebrations, while trading at the NSE and BSE will be suspended due to the Ganesh Chaturthi festival on September 19, 2023.
Two stock market holidays have been announced for October and November. In October 2023, two stock market holidays will be observed: Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti (2nd October) and Dussehra (24th October).
Diwali Balipratipada (14th November) and Gurunanak Jayanti are both stock market holidays in October 2023. (27th November). The last stock market holiday of 20223 is on December 25th for the Christmas holiday.
So, in 2023, there will be no stock market holidays in February or July, but up to three holidays in April. There will be two stock market holidays in March, October, and November, with a single trading holiday in January (26th, Republic Day), May (1st, Maharashtra Day), June (28th, Bakri Id), August (15th, Independence Day), September (19th, Ganesh Chaturthi), and December (25th, Christmas).

In 2022, the 50-stock Nifty index increased by 2.72 percent, while the 30-stock BSE Sensex increased by 2.80 percent. However, the Nifty Bank index outpaced key benchmark indices by a wide margin, rising 21% in a year. However, broad market indices continued to lag in terms of return generation. The small-cap index fell 3% in 2022, while the BSE mid-cap index up 0.30 percent.
