One of Bollywood’s most loved films is finally gearing up for a return. According to a report by Bollywood Hungama, Aamir Khan has officially begun work on the sequel to the 2009 blockbuster 3 Idiots, with filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani once again expected to direct the project. The upcoming sequel is reportedly in the pre-production stage and will feature a fresh storyline with a significant time jump.

Sources suggest that the original trio — Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi — are all expected to reprise their iconic roles. The sequel will reportedly revisit Rancho, Farhan and Raju nearly 10 years after the events of the first film, while introducing a completely new narrative twist. Interestingly, insiders claim the story may not necessarily continue directly after the original film, adding more mystery around the plot.

Directed by Rajkumar Hirani and written by Abhijat Joshi, the original 3 Idiots became a landmark film in Indian cinema upon its release in 2009. Also starring Kareena Kapoor Khan, Boman Irani, Mona Singh and Omi Vaidya, the film was loosely inspired by Chetan Bhagat’s bestselling novel Five Point Someone and explored the pressures of India’s education system through humour, emotion and satire.

Aamir Khan had earlier confirmed that Hirani and Abhijat Joshi were actively developing the sequel’s script. Speaking about the project in earlier interviews, the actor reportedly described the story as “beautiful” and said it retains the humour and emotional core of the original while offering something fresh for audiences.

Ever since the reports surfaced online, fans have flooded social media with excitement, with many calling 3 Idiots one of the most influential Bollywood films of all time. With the original team seemingly reuniting after nearly two decades, anticipation around the sequel has already skyrocketed.
