Hindustan Zinc Limited, the world’s largest integrated zinc producer, has announced a strategic partnership with Tata Steel to expand the use of EcoZen, a low-carbon zinc solution, in sustainable steel manufacturing. This collaboration underscores both companies’ commitment to integrating climate considerations into industrial processes and procurement strategies.
EcoZen, Asia’s first low-carbon zinc, is produced using renewable energy and boasts a verified carbon footprint of less than 1 tonne of CO₂ equivalent per tonne of zinc, which is approximately 75% lower than the global industry average. By significantly reducing emissions at the raw material stage, EcoZen enables downstream industries to lower value-chain emissions and advance their decarbonisation goals.
Arun Misra, CEO of Hindustan Zinc, remarked on the development, stating, “EcoZen represents our vision to offer sustainable metal solutions that support the evolving needs of global manufacturing. Our partnership with Tata Steel is a significant milestone in scaling up the adoption of low-carbon zinc and reinforcing greener supply chains across India’s industrial ecosystem.”
Zinc plays a crucial role in galvanising steel, protecting it against corrosion and extending its service life. This makes it indispensable across sectors such as infrastructure, automotive, renewable energy, electronics, and energy storage. The adoption of EcoZen can help avoid approximately 400 kg of CO₂ emissions per tonne of steel galvanised compared to conventional zinc, providing customers with a tangible pathway to reducing Scope 3 emissions while enhancing overall sustainability performance.
Ranjan Sinha, Chief Procurement Officer at Tata Steel, commented, “Tata Steel congratulates its strategic partner, Hindustan Zinc, on the delivery of Ecozen to our Sahibabad plant. This collaboration underscores our shared commitments to sustainable practices and advancing green technologies amongst our supplier ecosystem.”
Hindustan Zinc has been a trusted partner to Tata Steel for over two decades. The expanded engagement under the EcoZen initiative represents a significant evolution in this collaboration, integrating decades of operational excellence with a focus on decarbonisation, sustainable practices, and responsible sourcing. This positions both companies at the forefront of a more resilient steel value chain. The partnership aims to support broader sustainability and climate commitments, including Scope 3 emissions reduction and climate-aligned procurement frameworks, while advancing India’s transition toward low-carbon, resilient industrial growth.
