Shares of Sona BLW Precision Forgings Ltd. (Sona Comstar) are likely to remain in focus after the Supreme Court referred the high-profile ₹30,000 crore dispute involving the Kapur family to mediation.

The dispute involves 80-year-old Rani Kapur and her daughter-in-law Priya Sachdev Kapur over the estate and family trust linked to the late industrialist Sunjay Kapur, former chairman of Sona Comstar.

A Supreme Court bench led by Justice JB Pardiwala directed the parties to attempt an amicable settlement through mediation and appointed former Chief Justice of India Justice DY Chandrachud as the mediator. The Court also instructed all parties to refrain from making public statements or posting on social media regarding the matter.

“This being a family affair, the endeavour should be to resolve the dispute and put an end to the matter. We firmly believe all parties should participate in the mediation with an open mind,” the Court observed.

The latest development comes amid an ongoing legal battle over control of the Sona Group family trust and the estate of late businessman Sunjay Kapur. Rani Kapur has challenged the creation and functioning of the trust, alleging that she was divested of control over family assets without informed consent.

The dispute intensified after Sunjay Kapur’s death last year. Parallel proceedings are also underway before the Delhi High Court involving claims over the estate by Priya Sachdev Kapur and Sunjay Kapur’s children from his earlier marriage with actor Karisma Kapoor. Recently, the Delhi High Court granted interim relief restraining the creation of third-party rights over certain assets linked to the estate.

The Supreme Court had earlier encouraged the family to explore mediation, observing that prolonged litigation involving an elderly litigant would serve little purpose.

Sona Comstar itself is not directly a party to the mediation proceedings, but the dispute has drawn investor attention because of the Kapur family’s historic association with the company and the broader Sona Group. Following Sunjay Kapur’s death in 2025, questions around succession, control of trusts and ownership structures had triggered heightened scrutiny around the promoter family dynamics.

Sona Comstar is one of India’s leading automotive technology companies with a strong presence in electric vehicle systems, differential assemblies, gears and precision-forged components supplied to global automakers.
