Engineering and construction major Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured a large order in the range of ₹2,500 crore to ₹5,000 crore for a key energy transition project in Odisha, further strengthening its presence in the hydrocarbon and process industries segment.

The contract has been awarded to L&T’s Energy Hydrocarbon Onshore division by Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Ltd (BCGCL), a joint venture between Coal India Limited and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited.

The project involves setting up a coal-to-ammonium nitrate facility, a strategic initiative aimed at converting domestic coal into value-added industrial chemicals. As part of the order, L&T will develop a Nitric Acid and Ammonium Nitrate plant on a lump sum turnkey (LSTK) basis, taking full responsibility for execution from design to commissioning.

Once operational, the facility is expected to produce 2,000 tonnes of ammonium nitrate per day. This output will cater to the rising demand from India’s mining, infrastructure, and industrial sectors, where ammonium nitrate is widely used.

The scope of work includes process licensing, basic and detailed engineering, procurement, construction, and complete project management. It also covers mechanical completion, pre-commissioning, commissioning, performance testing, and final handover of the plant.
