China has aired spying allegations as well as confessions on a state television against Taiwan. It has set up a campaign to assert its claim that Taiwan is its sovereign territory. Reportedly, the country has also sent fighter jets near the island.

Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen has retaliated saying the island will not provoke but will defend itself.

Since Sunday evening, Chinese state television has been showing, detained Taiwanese spies who have been operating in China, and making them confess to their alleged crimes.

Popularly read Chinese tabloid (run by the Communist Party’s official People’s Daily), on Wednesday said the revelations were a warning to “Taiwan separatist forces”.

In defence, Taiwan has said, “China is framing and entrapping people. Making people confess to their crimes before television and prior to a trial is a serious breach of proper legal process, something rights groups have long criticised Beijing for doing.”

Both China and Taiwan have long accused each other of spying and infiltration but “Taiwan did not do that anymore and did not need to,” said Taiwan Premier Su Tseng-chang, Taiwanese politician as well as serving Premier of the Republic of China since 2019.
