Michael C. Hall is set to reprise his iconic role in Showtime/Paramount+’s new “Dexter” sequel series, “Dexter: Resurrection.” This series will continue the story from where the last sequel, “Dexter: New Blood,” left off. The intriguing part is figuring out how Dexter is back, considering the 2022 finale showed him bleeding out in the freezing cold.
Back then, creator and showrunner Clyde Phillips confirmed Dexter’s death. So, how is he back now?
“Was it?” Hall teased at the Variety studio, presented by Google TV, during San Diego Comic-Con. “I don’t know what I am authorized to say other than, it’s really cold out there.”
“Dexter” originally aired on Showtime from 2006 to 2013. The limited series “Dexter: New Blood” aired for one season from 2021 to 2022, set 10 years after the original finale.
“Dexter: Resurrection,” scheduled for a Summer 2025 debut, will pick up exactly where the last series left off, according to Hall. This new series is expected to be an ongoing drama, potentially spanning multiple seasons.
The original “Dexter” has seen a resurgence in popularity, climbing the Neilsen charts and ranking No. 2 for the week of June 24, with 1.48 billion viewing minutes across all platforms.
“It’s unbelievable,” Hall told Variety about the renewed interest. “There’s something about this world, something about this character that captivates people.”
Hall reflected on why the show resonates with viewers, suggesting that in a chaotic world, people might be drawn to a character who takes unique control of his life. “We all have our shadow side that we contend with, and Dexter’s is obviously a little weightier than most. People enjoy spending time with someone who is doing his best to take responsibility for that side in his sort of outside-the-box way and morally grey way. People, I think, relish the invitation to identify with someone who is contending with this much darkness, and maybe contending with it in a way that is arguably admirable — even though he’s doing what he’s doing.”
At the end of “New Blood,” Dexter saw his sister Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) in a flashback. When asked if Deb might return in the new series, Hall said, “Never say never. This world has sort of magical element, so I wouldn’t definitively say no to any proposition. There’s a whole cast of characters that populate his wider world and have the potential to re-emerge.”
For those who want to catch up, previous seasons of both shows are available for subscribers on Paramount+ with the Paramount+ with Showtime plan.
