I dialled SSP Saharanpur’s number and told him that I had been shot and was in pain. I don’t recall much because I became agitated. I believe one of our employees was hurt, but I’m not sure. I have no animosity against anyone, Azad stated.

The Bhim Army has in the meantime released a statement on the assault. “The murderous assault on Bhai Chandrasekhar Azad, National President of the Bhim Army, in Deoband, Saharanpur, is a wicked attempt to put an end to the Bahujan Mission Movement! The Bhim Army issued a statement demanding the immediate arrest of the suspect, harsh action, and protection for National President Bhai Chandrasekhar Azad.

The founder of the Bhim Army, Chandrashekhar, became well-known following the Police-Dalit conflict in Saharanpur in 2017 as the latter protested the caste clash that had occurred in the district at the time. He was then detained by the UP STF, but was released on bail in November 2017. The NSA against him was dropped in 2018, but the UP government imprisoned him and did so. Later, he established the Azad Samaj Party, the Bhim Army’s political branch, which is quite powerful in Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar, and the surrounding districts.
