The Finnish company, Salcomp, which is a major supplier to Apple plans to increase its workforce manifolds in India in the coming three years to nearly 25,000. The company is known to be the biggest supplier of chargers for Apple and currently employs about 12,000 people in Chennai with 85% of them being women.

“China Plus One strategy is at its peak at this moment … The whole supply chain is now kind of looking at an alternative. And India is poised to be one of the best alternatives,” said Sasikumar Gendham, managing director, of Salcomp Manufacturing India. Almost every country is trying to approach India as its manufacturing hub to boost its supply chain which was earlier connected to China. This is a big chance for Indian industries to get hold of the global market and boost their economy.

Foxconn, another Apple supplier, also plans to quadruple the workforce at its iPhone factory in India over two years, Reuters reported last year.

Currently, iPhones are assembled in India by at least three of Apple’s global suppliers: Foxconn and Pegatron in Tamil Nadu; and Wistron in nearby Karnataka state.

At a time when major tech giants like Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, etc. are laying off employees, Apple, and its suppliers will provide a major relief to job seekers in India.
