Recently, a new symptom of the Coronavirus infection has been added to the list – mouth rash. Earlier, along with general flu symptoms, chills, loss of smell and taste were added to the list of symptoms. As cases have been rising steadily, finding a cure has been the topmost priority of the doctors now.
As per a new study by doctors in Spain, rashes on the inside of the mouth, known as enanthem could be a possible COVID-19 symptom. The study was published on July 15, by Dr Juan Jimenez-Cauhe, of University Hospital Ramon y Cajal in Madrid. It was published in JAMA Dermatology.
In the month of April, 21 patients were diagnosed and were found to have skin rashes. Among these, 29% of the patients had enanthem on the inside of their mouths. Further studies said that the rash could appear anywhere from two days before the onset of other COVID-19 symptoms. Or 24 days after, with 12 days as an average time.
“An enanthem is a rash typically small spots that are either reddish or white on the mucous membranes. It is very common in patients with viral infections like chickenpox and hand, foot, and mouth disease. It is characteristic of many viral rashes to affect mucous membranes,” said Dr Michele Green, a dermatologist who practices at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York.
Jimenez-Cauhe’s group noted that the fact about the widespread of this new symptom with COVID-19 is still unknown.
