There is a possibility that the United Arab Emirates may reintroduce a de-facto overnight curfew in particular areas of the country if there is a rise in the number of COVID-19 cases.

When asked whether the national sterilization programme would be reinforced again, National Emergency Crises and Disaster Management Authority spokesman Seif al-Zahiri told emirates TV, “Yes, there is a possibility that it might be reintroduced in certain areas where we observe high numbers of cases.”

Till now UAE has recorded total of 65,802 infections and 369 deaths. Though the daily infection rate has fallen from a peak of 900 in late May but there are periodic spikes despite a falling trend.

The health minister of the country Abdul Rahman Bin Mohmadded al-Qwais said that the number of cases can rise as there has been a rapid spike in the numbers in the previous two weeks.

The regional business and tourism hub removed the nationwide curfew on June 24 and public venues and businesses are now open but the number of cases rose to 400 for the first time since July, including 461 infections and two deaths in 24 hours to Thursday. Thus there is a sheer possibility of imposing a curfew to control the number of increasing cases.
