Contrary to the claims made by the Telangana Public Health Department that no cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) have been detected in the state, a private laboratory in Hyderabad has disclosed 11 confirmed cases of the virus in December 2024. The Mani Microbiological Laboratory, a prominent diagnostic center in the city, conducted tests on 258 respiratory samples, revealing that 11 samples tested positive for HMPV. Importantly, all patients have since fully recovered.
According to the lab’s report, these cases were part of a broader analysis of respiratory infections in the region. Among the other findings, 94 cases were identified as bacterial pneumonia, 62 as rhinovirus, 33 as adenovirus, 9 as influenza, and 1 as H1N1. This comprehensive data highlights the variety of upper respiratory tract infections currently affecting the population.
HMPV is not a novel virus, as emphasized by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
The laboratory findings contrast with the Telangana Public Health Department’s stance that no HMPV cases have been reported in the state. Experts point out the need for heightened surveillance and accurate reporting to ensure a clear understanding of the virus’s prevalence. Public health authorities are being urged to align their reports with independent laboratory findings to provide a transparent overview of the health landscape.
HMPV primarily causes upper respiratory infections with flu-like symptoms. Though generally not severe, it can pose risks to individuals with compromised immunity, the elderly, and young children. Preventative measures such as wearing masks, maintaining hygiene, and avoiding crowded places are recommended.
