On Monday, March 28, Russia’s foreign minister Sergei Lavrov said that a direct one on one talk between Volodymyr Zelenskyy & President Putin will be counterproductive. This statement comes amidst the preparation of talks between the two countries in Turkey.

“President (Putin) has said he has never refused to meet President Zelensky. The only thing that he considers fundamentally important is for these meetings to be well prepared,” said the foreign minister.

Lavrov has further said that the talks would not be productive as the issue has been going on for quite some time. “The current issue had been brewing so long, all these years, that a huge number of problems have built up, therefore just meeting and exchanging views on what you think and I think, that would just be counterproductive now,” said Lavrov.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy & Vladimir Putin have met only once at Paris in 2019. Meanwhile, Russia has diverted its focus from Kyiv to the eastern region of Donbas.
