Kansas City Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub had a strong reaction to Donald Trump’s latest comments about the NFL’s new kickoff rule. Trump has criticized the rule many times, most recently calling it “terrible” on “The Pat McAfee Show.”
Toub did not hold back when reporters asked him about the criticism. He said Trump “doesn’t even know what he’s looking at” and has “no idea” how the new kickoff rule works. He added that he hopes Trump hears what he said.
A clip of Toub’s comments spread quickly online. Former Chiefs star Tyreek Hill noticed it and said he loved it. Hill played for Kansas City from twenty sixteen to twenty twenty one and worked closely with Toub when he was a returner early in his career.
Toub has been the Chiefs’ special teams coordinator since twenty thirteen and became an associate head coach in twenty eighteen.
Trump shared his complaints during a Veterans Day special. He said the rule hurts the “pageantry” of football and does not make the game safer because players still collide. He has also called the rule “sissy football.”
But not everyone agrees with him. During Thursday Night Football, Al Michaels and Kirk Herbstreit praised the rule after Buffalo Bills returner Ray Davis ran a kickoff back ninety seven yards for a touchdown. The NFL says the new system has led to more returns while also improving player safety.
