The Supreme Court on Tuesday restricted Ranveer Allahbadia, Samay Raina, and Apoorva Mukhija from airing any show till further notice.
The apex court’s order came as it heard a plea by YouTuber Ranveer to club FIRs filed against him across various states, including Maharashtra and Assam, over his parents and sex remark on Samay’s show, India’s Got Latent.
While the top court rapped Ranveer over his distasteful comment, which triggered a wave of reactions against the latter online, it also granted him protection from arrest in multiple FIRs. It has also been directed by SC that no further FIRs shall be lodged against Ranveer for his controversial comment on the roast show.
Several restrictions have also been imposed on the podcaster, such as depositing his passport at Thane police station. The court has ordered that he is prohibited from traveling abroad without court’s prior approval.
The matter was heard by a two-judge bench, including Justice Surya Kant and Justice Kotiswar Singh. Allahbadia was defended by advocate Abhinav Chandrachud, son of former Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud.
The SC expressed displeasure on the remarks of YouTuber during his guest appearance on IGL. “Just because somebody thinks he has become so popular and can speak any kind of words, can he take the entire society for granted? Is there anyone on earth who will like this language? There is something very dirty in his mind that has been vomited,” said the court.
As Ranveer’s lawyer claimed that he is getting threats, Justice Surya Kant said, “if you can seek cheap publicity by using abusive language, this person (who has threatened the petitioner) extending the threat is also seeking publicity.”
In response, the lawyer apprised the court about a social media post offering Rs. 5 lakh to anyone “bringing his (Ranveer) tongue.” Replying to which, Justice Kant said, “His language is still better than yours. We disapprove threats but let law take its own course.”
Meanwhile, Ranveer has been directed by the bench to cooperate in the probe of the FIRs lodged at Maharashtra and Assam.
