Carlo Ancelotti’s men extend their lead at the top of the table to nine points with second-place Sevilla involved in a derby against Real Betis on Sunday.
Los Blancos had the last laugh in a brilliant, end-to-end game throughout which either side could have won. The Whites made an early start and could have taken an early need through Asensio who missed multiple chances. However, Vallecano grew into the game and started to create tension in the Real Madrid half.
The second period hinged on a chaotic last 10 minutes. At one end, Courtois made a sensational double save to keep Madrid in the game. Then Madrid countered and won the game through a brilliant one-two-one by Benzema and Vinicius Jr. Vallecano were not able to do much as all of them were gassed out.
Courtois once again proved extremely crucial for Real Madrid’s form as he saved five shots on target. Benzema scored his 19th goal of the season which extends his lead in the top-scorer chart. Vinicius Jr assisted him after a give-and-go with the French forward.
Rayo Vallecano has not won a single game in 2022 thus far, losing five league matches in a row. However, they are still 10 points above the relegation zone, and with the fight shown today, they have what it takes to stay in the top-flight. In the top half of the table, the title race looks to go down to the last game week as neither Real Madrid nor Sevilla looks like they are going to drop points.
