On Thursday, April 15, a senior Japanese ruling party official Toshihiro Nikai said that cancelling this year’s Olympics in Tokyo remains an option if the coronavirus crisis becomes too dire, as a fourth wave of infections surges less than 100 days from the planned start of the Games.
Toshihiro Nikai is the important leader in the Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga’s ruling Party.
Kyodo new agency reported– “Holding the Olympics is practically impossible, we will have nothing but to give up the idea, secretary-general of the Liberal Democratic Party, said in a television interview.”
Olympic organisers, Japan’s national Olympic committee and the Tokyo government did not immediately respond to cancellation of Tokyo Olympic.
Tokyo Olympic was initially to be held in 2020, but it was postponed to July-August 2021 due to pandemic created by COVID-19 cases. Japanese authorities took many steps to restrict the movement of foreigners inside their territory.
Japan reported more than 516, 000 COVID-19 cases till now and 9,400 have lost their lives.
World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared the emergency on March 11, 2020 because of the outbreak of COVID-19.
