An IIT Kharagpur student staying in the hostel tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday, following which the institute has sealed all its hostels. Earlier, in the beginning of the pandemic the institute had asked its students to vacate the hostels by June 30 and return for the next semester. But some students remained in the hostels and the student infected with Coronavirus is one of them.

“The student has been sent to Kolkata”, an official said according to IndiaTV. He also added that hostels have been sanitized.

“All students who are presently staying in the campus must vacate the Halls latest by August 23, 2020 and proceed their hometowns”. Read a notice issued by the institute’s Hall Management Centre.

Earlier the IIT had decided to conduct online classes considering the pandemic situation.
It would also be difficult for a number of students to reach back to the campus since transport facility might not be available to them.

Regarding connectivity and other issues that the students will have to face with online classes which is expected to begin from September, the administration said that those who are unable to work out a way would be provided with extra classes once campus activities resume.
