Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced that the schools in the national capital will remain close. The decision is taken in view of the third wave that is expected to hit the country in the coming months.

On being asked about the reopening of schools, the Chief Minister as quoted by ‘ANI’ stated, “Not now. International trends show that the third wave of COVID is imminent. So we don’t want to take any risk until the vaccination process is completed.”

In the past 24 hours, Delhi registered 72 cases of COVID 19 along with one death for the second consecutive day. The total number of active COVID cases reached 671 in the city. According to the health bulletin, 88 patients recovered from the COVID 19 infection in the last 24 hours. Delhi’s recovery rate is stable at 95.2 percent for the seventh successive day.

The health bulletin stated that altogether 69,212 tests have been carried out in the national capital. Among these, 45,615 RTPCR and 23,597 rapid antigen tests were conducted.

Reportedly, the shortage of vaccines in the city has resulted in a decline in its vaccination rate. Several vaccination centers have been forced to remain close considering the matter. Earlier, Health Minister Satyendar Jain as cited by ‘The Indian Express’ claimed, “We are fully prepared to vaccinate a large number of people, but there’s a lack of vaccines which halt our otherwise smooth going vaccination programme.”

Since the nationwide lockdown, Delhi had reopened schools for the students of Classes 9 and 11 in the month of February. However, it had to be closed due to the massive outbreak of the second wave of COVID 19. Delhi was one of the worst-hit cities in the second wave of the pandemic.
