As the second wave of COVID-19 is sweeping through England, the government has decided to impose fines of upto 10,000 pounds under the emergency “carrot and stick” plan. The measure is taken so that they can better handle the spread of COVID-19.
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said “people who choose to ignore the rules will face significant fines. We need to work on this together to control the spread of the virus, to prevent the most vulnerable people from becoming infected and to save lives.”
The measure was announced as the second wave was spreading quickly from north England. On Saturday a total of 4,422 positive cases came up in the UK. Boris Johnson has also said that he along with the ministers is considering imposing a two-week circuit break. This will include strict rules to control the spread of the virus.
One of the relief measures taken in UK is one off 500 pounds support payment for those surviving on low incomes. Also fines will be imposed on employers who punish those who have been asked to self isolate.
The attorney general has told that more than 19,000 fines have been issued in England and wales so far for breaking the COVID-19 laws.
