The Ludhiana-based Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), which is operated by the Punjab government, has released a warning over the spread of Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) in several regions of the nation. The Capripoxvirus, according to the university’s advice, is what causes the illness. It is spread by arthropod vectors such as ticks, biting flies, and mosquitoes. Originally indigenous to Africa, the illness has recently expanded to Punjab and other northern Indian states after first infecting the southern provinces of that country. According to the advice, cows and buffaloes are the animals most commonly affected by the disease.
In the most recent update, Chief Minister Bhagwat Mann announced that he would set up a Group of Ministers who would be responsible to track and report the development of the lumpy skin disease among the animals which has been termed a pandemic in the country. He has also decided to launch a massive vaccination drive to save animals.
Dr Ashwini of GADVASU mentioned,” Affected animals should be treated at the farm itself; they should not be transported to hospitals or polyclinics, as high fever/ hyperthermia often develops in these animals due to high environmental temperature and humidity”.
